The GrubiNetz project: A Path to Confidence and Independence

Being able to read a book, write a birthday card, or sign a document are easy-to-do natural everyday things for most of us. For some, however, these can be daunting challenges. That's where the GrubiNetz project comes in. In the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, this remarkable initiative is changing lives by teaching adults basic literacy skills in an informal environment.

GrubiNetz, a project co-funded by ESF+, presents a network of support, collaboration, and empowerment. Working hand in hand with public institutions that provide essential training and guidance in economic, job-related, and social matters, Grubinetz provides training to partners on how to recognise people lacking basic literacy skills. With a focus on dignity and consideration, the training includes tips on how to approach these staff members and support them in finding the appropriate learning opportunities for them.

A team of six dedicated project members oversees the coordination of local and regional networks, ensuring that support reaches those who need it most.  GrubiNetz collaborates with partners across Germany and Europe, promoting the exchange of best practices in basic education in Austria, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

One innovative aspect of the project is the establishment of "Lerncafés" (learning cafes), designed to ease individuals into the learning process. Free of charge and with no need to register, these welcoming spaces offer open learning and counselling sessions, providing a supportive and informal environment for learners to kickstart their educational journey.

Santino’s story

Santino, one of Grubinetz’s learners, wanted to improve his literacy skills to better support his children. He gained much more than learning how to read and write: “My progress in reading and writing has strengthened my self-confidence. Today, I am a puppeteer with my own puppet theatre, and I write my stories myself! I think that it is important that nobody is afraid to seek support. Taking the first step might be scary but it's so worth it!” Read Santino’s story and many more in the Real People Real Skills project

Through GrubiNetz, individuals are not only gaining essential literacy skills but also building confidence and independence. By breaking down barriers and fostering a supportive learning environment, GrubiNetz is paving the way for a brighter future for all its participants.
